1st of May

Exchanges were rather pleasant for the days prior. I began to taste the joyful fruits of my existence. Those of my stagnant routines, they still are part of my life, but slowly have they faded into irrelevancies. Those volumes of books, I still wish to read them, but so swirled by the waves of emotions as the mailman spoke: “Sir, 3 letters from the same young lady?”, the ability to ingest difficult texts have slowly waned.

Traces of guilt overcame me, as I have realized that I’ve spent the entire morning composing a letter to her. Our correspondence ranged in topics, but think not our exchanges as mere intellectual duets. In the gaps of debates and contemplations, lied many other elements of charm. I composed short-poems for her, at times they were miscellaneous, but moments will come where hidden sentiments were conveyed. She shared corners of her vivid imagination along with tales so humorous, that often I get complaints from neighbors regarding my laughter. One time, she told me that in order to pique the interests of a student of hers, she had to howl like a wolf, whilst putting on a mask of that kind. Could you imagine? A cultured lady, getting on the ground with a wolf’s mask, pretending to be a beast just to delight a child’s heart? Endearing, it sure was. Whenever I revive the scene in my head, a spontaneous urge to let out a sudden burst of laughter, has always startled passing strangers.

After composing that letter, I went to the library and returned several volumes. I could no longer continue with Paradise Lost, for I was simply not in a frame of mind to tackle an Epic poem: infatuations had flooded my senses.

“It’s ok my dear, you’re not the only one tearing your hair out over Milton.” The librarian said mockingly. Behind her statement lied something else; “How are you today? You seem rather happy.”

“Yeah, letting go a book that no longer resonates.. Ah, is quite freeing. Hmm, may I borrow, Dickens, by chance? I was told that Dickens is quite a brilliant narrator.”
